Josef Hoffmann's Montezuma is a geometric feast for the eye – zigzags, dots, and lines rendered in black and white create a pattern that has been in style since 1903. The original design, rendered in ink, brush, and graphite on paper, was created for the Wiener Werkstätte – a legendary Viennese community of artists and craftsmen. Hoffmann, a close friend of Gustav Klimt, was inspired by the art of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, as evidenced by the pattern's rhythmic, triangular arrangement.
