Montezuma by Josef Hoffmann is a geometric feast for the eyes – zigzags, dots, and lines captured in black and white create a pattern that has been in style since 1903. The original design, made with ink, brush, and graphite on paper, was created for Wiener Werkstätte – the legendary Viennese community of artists and craftsmen. Hoffmann, a close friend of Gustav Klimt, was inspired by the art of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, which is evident in the rhythmic, triangular arrangement of the pattern.
